The West Carrollton Hall of Fame inducted Coach Bill Poock and student athlete, Thom
as Weller, at the annual ceremony on Friday, January 10. Pirate supporter, Roger Eberly, was inducted into the Pirate Crew Club.
Bill Poock served the Pirates as
a teacher, athletic director and tech support team member. His passion for
sports combined with his desire to assist student athletes led him to coaching.
He served as an assistant coach in football for 14 years and as an assistant
coach, and later head coach, in wrestling for 22 years. His most memorable
season as head wrestling coach was in 1993 when he led the Pirates to an
undefeated season. During his induction, Bill thanked his assistant coaches and
everyone he worked with for helping him. Bill retired after a 43-year career in
West Carrollton where he is remembered as a leader for students in the
classroom, in the gym and on the playing field. He enjoys traveling and spending
time fly fishing.
Thomas Weller, class of 1984, was
an outstanding student and athlete for the Pirates. He joined the basketball
team that had averaged only four wins per season the previous six years. Tom
led the team as captain during his junior and senior year and, with his hard
work and talent, the team averaged nine wins per year. He was also named by his
coach, Jim Turvine, as the MVP during his junior and senior year. After
graduation, Tom attended Wittenberg University where he continued to play
basketball. He received his degree in business administration in 1988 and earned
a place in the Wittenberg Athletic Hall of Honor in 2012. He took time during
his induction to thank the West Carrollton administration, teachers and Coach
Turvine for preparing him to perform well on the court and in the classroom. He
also thanked his parents for supporting him during his time in high school.
Roger Eberly and his wife, Liz, moved to the West Carrollton School District in 1977. Their daughters both graduated from West Carrollton – Janet in 2000 and Laura in 2002. He began volunteering for the athletic department in 1996 as a volunteer tennis coach and later became the assistant tennis coach for five years. He became the head boys’ and girls’ coach from 2005 through 2007. Roger served as the treasurer of the athletic boosters from 2006 to 2016 and has volunteered countless hours of time to the Pirates. Last April, he was also recognized by the West Carrollton Education Foundation and was inducted into the Distinguished Service Hall of Fame.
