School Delays and Closures

If bad weather occurs, we are monitoring conditions through the night into the early morning. The decision to delay or close is usually not made until morning as we give our school maintenance and city road crews the opportunity to work.

When a decision is made, we begin posting the information on:

--- Facebook at West Carrollton City Schools.

--- The banner at the top of the district web page at

--- Local news channels, including 2, 7, 22 and 45 are notified so they may begin televising alerts. You may also be notified directly from the television station if you sign up for a text alert from them.

Phone calls are initiated beginning at 5:45 a.m. and continue until shortly after 6 a.m. or the evening prior if possible. The call system will make five attempts to contact the primary number. If there is no answer, the system will no longer call after the fifth attempt. If the system reaches an answering machine, it will leave a message.

Anyone who has opted out of the call system will not receive a call.

We realize that delays and closings affect family schedules, and we do not make the decision lightly. We understand that no matter if we delay, close or stay open, not everyone will agree; however, know that many factors, primarily student safety, are considered before a decision is made.

Students are not released early from school if bad weather occurs during the day. There are many reasons why early releases would be a safety concern for students.

--- Many students would be home alone.

--- Students, especially our younger students, are safer in the classroom than they are if they are at home alone.

--- Some students do not have keys and would not be able to access their home which could be even more perilous for the student during inclement weather.

Parents/guardians may choose to keep their child home or sign out their child early, but it’s important to know this would be considered an unexcused absence if school has not been delayed or closed.
