Second-grade students in Mrs. Fee's class have been busy. Together, they have made a kindness quilt to give away. This is the second quilt they have completed this school year.
Mrs. Fee said that kindness is something that is part of the daily routine in her classroom, and the students have been excited to work on the quilts and spread kindness to others. The first quilt was given to an elementary school student who was in the hospital.
The second quilt was presented to four-year-old Harper Moore, who visited the classroom with her mother, Courtney Digiorgio. Her mother explained to the students that Harper has epilepsy and has frequent hospital visits and stays, along with therapies to help her.
The quilt will provide comfort for Harper during hospital visits and at home. Mrs. Fee pointed out that the quilt can also be an "I Spy" game for Harper because of all of the objects hidden in the fabric, including flowers and butterflies.
Students designed each square of the quilt using fabric Mrs. Fee contributed to the project. After creating a design, Mrs. Fee brought in her sewing machine to put the squares together. She said, "I pushed the fabric through while each student had a turn using the foot pedal."
Students were able to tell Harper which square they had worked on and why they had chosen the fabric for the square. Mrs. Fee said, "They really put their hearts into this quilt." The students also signed the gift bag and put stickers on it.
Shy at first, Harper soon gave high-fives to students to thank them for their kindness and joined students at their desks to make new friends.
