Mrs. Rix works with High School students with special needs. A recent class focused on watching her teach about life after graduation and used “modules,” a new term for some students. Some modules included creating a transition plan for life after high school, being productive in the community, and choosing employment that matches skills and interests. The High School experience gives these students life and work skills. With a Job Coach's help, they work at the Pirate Bay Cafe and run the school's coffee shop; at the City of West Carrollton, they clean the lobby; at Southbrook Church, they clean; and at Crayons to Classrooms, they stock shelves.

Jordan is a Middle School student, and he is enjoying the new building, especially the climate control. “The old building was always hot or cold.” He is proud to wear his Pirate shirt and enjoyed representing the Pirates when he played Middle School football. He said the team kept getting better throughout the season. He is looking forward to playing basketball and baseball. When he isn't playing a sport, he enjoys watching sports. His favorite subjects are math, “because I’m good at it,” and social studies, “because I like learning about the history of the earth and the United States.” He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. One of his favorite experiences in WC is “when I met my friend in preschool.” When he thinks about his future, he wants to play in the NFL, but if that doesn’t happen, he wants to be an anesthesiologist. #wcclassof2031

West Carrollton High School students are choosing Pirate Pearls. Each month, they select an educator and a support staff member who model the West Carrollton High School core values and the Pirate Way. The first recipients are Ms. Darrah and Mr. Freeman. Ms. Darrah was selected for her kindness, positivity, pride, engagement, leadership, and success. Mr. Freeman was selected for his inclusivity, relationships, success, kindness, positivity, leadership, and dedication. Each received a certificate and a gift bag of goodies to recognize them as Pearls. Each also received a special parking space for the month.

Things were wild at WC Elementary today when Wild Dayton visited. Josh brought snakes, lizards, a tarantula, a tortoise, and ferrets for students to learn about and even touch. Some students were brave enough to hold a tarantula or have a snake wrap around their neck. We are happy to say that everything he brought to show the students went home with him! Thank you, Josh and Wild Dayton, for making this a fun day!

The school district has a job opening for the position of Maintenance II. The hourly range of pay is $25.09 to $32.21 per hour. The successful candidate must have a High School Diploma; experience in building and grounds maintenance and repair; and a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the ability to provide their own transportation. Ms. Lanese began working with individuals with special needs after a friend recommended it. She worked in Montgomery County for a year before coming to WC, and she has worked as a paraprofessional in the school district for the last 18 years, assisting students with special needs, most recently at WC Intermediate School. She has also been a provider for the State of Ohio and has cared for one individual since the age of 6. He’s now 24, and Ms. Lanese has worked closely with his family to continue assisting him two nights a week. She says one benefit of her job is that her four children have become more aware of individuals with special needs in the community. When asked what her favorite part of the job is, she said, “Seeing when somebody gets it. Seeing the progress and watching them grow.”

There’s no better place to learn about Hispanic Heritage Month than in Miss Nolan’s Middle School Spanish class. She is teaching her students about Spanish culture and famous Spanish people from other countries, including artists and Nobel Peace Prize recipients. She is also teaching about famous people born in America whose parents came from a Hispanic country. These include Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, born in New York City to parents from Puerto Rico, and former astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa, born in Yuma, Arizona, to parents from Mexico.

Addie has been a Pirate since kindergarten, and now she’s in high school. Many of her classmates recognize her voice. She said, “I’ve been doing the Pledge of Allegiance during announcements since 7th grade. When I became a freshman, I asked Mr. White if I could keep doing it, and he said yes.” One of her favorite things at school is working on the yearbook because she likes learning new things with the camera and meeting new people. Another favorite is participating in Business Professionals of America. She was one of three members of a team that qualified to compete at the state level last school year in the Broadcast News Production Team category and is looking forward to competing again this year. Addie also represents the Pirates in Cross Country and Track & Field. When asked what makes WC special, she said, “The diversity and kind people. We’re different, but we can find things we agree on.”

Did you know October is National Manufacturing Month? NML, a subsidiary of Globus Medical in West Carrollton, opened its doors to 30 Middle School students last week. Students saw manufacturing equipment and the medical parts they produce. They learned about the different jobs NML employees do and the education required for each position.

October 6 is National Coaches Day. Being a coach isn’t easy. Bringing players with different skill levels together takes determination and patience to help everyone work as a team. Encouraging athletes who compete as individuals is a balancing act of knowing when to support them and when to push them to conquer skills they didn’t know they could do. Many coaches join their team after a full day at their “regular job”, but they are willing to put in extra time and work some more to support the Pirates. We appreciate all our coaches, including Instructional Coaches, who provide an additional layer of academic support to students and staff. We also want to recognize the coaches of local teams for helping younger players learn to work together and be prepared to play for the Pirates when they reach Middle School. Thank you all for what you do for the Pirates.

The Marching Band and Color Guard performed in the Homecoming Parade last night, and they also performed last Saturday at the Springboro Invitational. They received 2nd place in their division and best general effect, and our percussion and color guard received 2nd place. Go Pirates!!

You may remember a recent post we shared in early September about a student who loves the police and how his teacher made him a badge. The West Carrollton Police Department saw the post, and today they made a surprise visit to his classroom! They brought a junior officer badge sticker to everyone in the class, along with other goodies, including cupcakes! The officers had a Q&A session with the kids and took them outside to see a police cruiser. The visit ended with Asher being sworn in as an Honorary Police Officer. Congratulations to Officer Asher, and thank you to the West Carrollton Police Department for making this a special day!

It's National Coffee Day, and the crew at the Pirate Bay Cafe was ready! The Pirate Bay Cafe provides students with special needs with valuable job skills as they learn to wait on customers, run a cash register, make change, and, of course, make coffee! Job sites they visit outside of school are the City of West Carrollton, where they clean the lobby area, and Crayons to Classrooms, where they stock shelves.
