Boy with red hair smiling with a tarantula spider on his head. Children, a teacher, and cabinets are visible behind him

Sometimes you see someone with something in their hair. For some WC Elementary students, it may be a tarantula!

It was part of the fun when Wild Dayton visited the school and brought a tarantula, snakes, lizards, ferrets, and a tortoise. Josh Tesmer told the students his love for exotic creatures began at a young age. He brought his enthusiasm and knowledge, along with his animals that students could touch, to the classroom. Some of the brave were able to hold a spider or have a snake wrapped around their neck.

He explained that the first step to holding the animals was using hand sanitizer before and after for safety. Another lesson students learned was when he pointed out on a globe where the animal came from. This included "Tony," the 4-foot-long tegu from Argentina, and "Pacha," the tarantula from Mexico.

The interactive activity allowed all students to touch lizards and snakes and learn about their natural habitats, what each creature eats, and how Josh keeps them safe at Wild Dayton.
