The Pirate Pride Award is a special recognition. Recipients are shining examples of what being a Pirate is all about.
At the Sept. 3 West Carrollton Board of Education meeting, Cheer Coach Riley Oda was recognized for her dedication to the cheerleaders. She was nominated by co-coach Emily Biggs, who said, “She has taken the cheer program to new heights with her experience, knowledge, innovative ideas, and driven nature, helping the cheerleaders excel in their sport.” Besides being a Cheer Coach, Riley also works as a classroom assistant in the school district. Riley is a graduate of West Carrollton, and her Pirate Pride continues to be an example for her students in the classroom and her student athletes on the cheer squad. Additionally, the entire cheerleading team was recognized for showing their Pirate Pride. The team participated in a summer cheer camp. When other participants were asked what team they would like to be on (other than their own), the overwhelming response was West Carrollton because of the team’s kindness and spirit. The cheerleaders and Emily joined Riley to celebrate!
At the Sept. 17 West Carrollton Board of Education meeting, student Benjamin Tran was recognized for always bringing a smile to his classmates and staff. Ben has formed positive relationships within the school district and community. He was chosen as the student speaker to welcome the staff back for the school year at the August Convocation Meeting. He can often be seen at athletic events cheering for the Pirates. The Pirate Pride certificate he received read, “With sincere appreciation for continuous spirit and endless enthusiasm for fellow students and staff.” Ben always lights up a room, consistently exhibits his joy and passion for being a Pirate, and is a representative for the school district and the community of what being a Pirate is all about.
