Dear Pirate Families,

Congratulations to our girls’ track and field team! They brought home the championship trophy for their division in the Miami Valley League. They will be competing in the regional competition on Friday, and I want to wish them luck!

The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (CTC) recognized their senior class in a ceremony this past Wednesday night. I want to recognize all of our West Carrollton Seniors who went there to get a head start on their career. Many of those students would go to the CTC during the day and return after school to West Carrollton to participate in a sport or other activity. I admire their commitment to being a Pirate!

Don’t forget Trivia Night tomorrow, May 19, in the High School Cafeteria. Doors open at 6 and trivia begins at 7. Tickets will be available at the door for $20. You can play as an individual or a team of up to ten people.

Here is some interesting trivia. May is “Better Hearing and Speech Month.” West Carrollton has nine Speech and Language Pathologists that work throughout the school district to provide services to students.

We are continuing to highlight Seniors! You can see some of their stories on our Facebook page at West Carrollton City Schools and we will be posting more as we get closer to graduation. Check out #wc2023seniorspotlight

Volunteers are needed and appreciated. If you would like to volunteer in the school district, please contact Madison Stapleton at [email protected] to schedule a background check. It is part of our safety protocol that all volunteers pass a background check prior to volunteering.

The week of May 22 is the last full week of school. There will be no school on Monday, May 29 for Memorial Day. The last day of school and graduation for the Class of 2023 is June 1. CLICK HERE to find out more about graduation!

I want to thank everyone who came out for the Intermediate School Art Show last week, as well as everyone who has attended an open house, sporting event, musical event or any other school activity. It means a lot to our Pirates when they know they have support from family and friends.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be kind!

Dear Pirate Families,

There is no school Friday, May 11 for QPT Day. Staff will be meeting for professional development, teamwork and collaboration.

Teamwork and collaboration isn’t just for the staff! Teachers use creative lesson plans for students to work together. One example is the Amazing Race. Mrs. Felton and Mrs. Fiorentini are working together to give 5th grade students a trip around the world where they face challenges. Students work in teams to provide a solution to a math problem before they can move on to the next leg in the race.

Mark your calendar. The first ever Intermediate School art show will be Tuesday, May 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. Come out and see the incredible artwork created by fifth grade students!

You can still get a discounted price ticket for Trivia Night. This fun event will be May 19 in the High School Cafeteria. Doors open at 6 and trivia begins at 7. Early bird tickets are available for $15 until Wednesday, May 17. Tickets purchased after that date will be $20. You can play as an individual or a team of up to ten people. CLICK HERE for more information including how to purchase an advance ticket. You may also contact [email protected] with any questions.

Dear Pirate Families,

We have a West Carrollton history making event! Both our Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be graduating with over a 5.0 grade point average! Valedictorian Ayah El-Hardan will be going to Cornell University and plans to double major in biology and business. Salutatorian, Ashley Williams, will be going to the University of Dayton and plans to double major in biology and either computer science or chemistry. I am so proud of these students and their accomplishments.

Another outstanding Senior is A’Niyah Johnson who earned an Associate of Science degree from Sinclair prior to receiving her High School diploma! She did this through her College Credit Plus classes.

Graduation will be here soon! If you have a Senior, make sure to read all of the communication coming from the High School. There will be important information as we countdown to graduation on June 1.

Early Childhood Center Principal, Janet Schieman will be retiring at the end of the school year. She has been a great asset to the school district as well as to every student who has gone through her building. At the school board meeting last night, the board approved the employment of David Conger to be the new ECC principal at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year.

The Intermediate School is having an Art Show on Tuesday, May 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. The Art Show will feature artwork by fifth grade students.

If you have a child going to prom, please remind them to be safe, respectful and responsible. We want all of the attendees to have a good time and return home safely.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be kind!

Dear Pirate Families,

I am very proud of the Middle School Softball Team. Following their game Wednesday night, they joined the Tipp City team in a survivor’s walk around the bases to recognize the mother of a Tipp City player who is battling breast cancer. They displayed both empathy and good sportsmanship, and were examples of what it means to be a Pirate.

Next Friday is Signing Day. This is a day when students commit to their future. At the High School, Seniors sign a letter of commitment regarding their plans after graduation. Some will choose to continue their education at a college, university or trade school. Some will join the military. Some will go directly to the workforce. We encourage all of our students to explore various careers and we help them to map a path to whatever goals they wish to pursue.

The Pirate Band will be hosting Trivia Night on May 19 at the High School in the cafeteria. The doors open at 6 and trivia begins at 7. Early bird tickets are available for $15 until Wednesday, May 17. Tickets purchased after that date will be $20. You can play as an individual or a team of up to ten people. CLICK HERE for more information including how to purchase an advance ticket. You may also contact [email protected] with any questions.

The school district is celebrating Employee Appreciation Week next week. This coincides with National Teachers’ Day on May 2. We recognize that it takes all of our teachers and support staff to provide every child an opportunity to succeed, so we celebrate all of our employees throughout the week. If you see a school employee, take a moment to thank them or show an act of kindness. It can be as easy as a wave and a smile. I know that they appreciate it.

Dear Pirate Families,

Congratulations to the fifth graders who won a penny war against the sixth graders. The contest raised $1,000 that is being donated to the Dayton Humane Society and earned students a pizza party to celebrate.

Early Childhood Center students were served lunch by West Carrollton firefighters on Tuesday. This was a return visit by the firefighters who also served lunch last week to fourth grade students. This is a fun event for our students as well as the firefighters, and I appreciate them coming and being involved with our schools.

Don’t miss the Spring Musical! The Addams’ Family will be presented this weekend on April 21 at 7 p.m.; April 22 at 7 p.m.; and April 23 at 2 p.m. at the High School.  CLICK HERE if you would like to buy advance tickets. You may also purchase a ticket at the door.

Next Wednesday is Literacy Night. If you have a student in preschool through fourth grade, you are invited to come with your child to Literacy Night on April 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Early Childhood Center - 510 E. Pease Avenue. There will be games, prizes, raffles and food and the event is FREE!

National Honor Society students served lunch this morning to our Honored Citizens. Guests also got to enjoy a preview of the Spring Musical. This is another example of our students being involved with the community!

Testing is happening throughout the schools. Please make sure your child has a good night’s sleep. Remember that breakfast is free for every student. Studies show that students perform better when they are rested and have eaten, and we want all of our students to be able to do their best.

Volunteers are needed and appreciated. If you would like to volunteer in the school district, please contact Madison Stapleton at [email protected] to schedule a background check. It is part of our safety protocol that all volunteers pass a background check prior to volunteering.

Pirate Packs has been a long-time partner with the school district. The organization provides food for students in need to take home for the weekend. Like many charitable organizations, Pirate Packs has seen a decline in donations. Wednesday morning, they received a much needed donation of $2,500 and 4,737 food items from the Community Blood Center / Community Tissue Services (CBC). I want to thank Pirate Packs for all they do for our students as well as everyone who donates to their organization. You can visit https://piratepacks.org/ to find out more about the organization and how you can make a food, monetary or time donation.

Dear Pirate Families,

High School and 8th grade band students had an opportunity last week to blend history and community service together when they helped West Carrollton resident, Richard Gard, celebrate his 100th birthday. Mr. Gard is a World War II veteran who received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts during his military service. CLICK HERE to find out more about this story and see a clip of the WC band performance.

Students at Harry Russell had a big surprise at lunch today. Instead of the usual food servers, West Carrollton firefighters served lunch. Our community firefighters engage with students throughout the school year through fire prevention and safety talks as well as fun events.

Volunteers are needed and appreciated. If you would like to volunteer in the school district, please contact Madison Stapleton at [email protected] to schedule a background check. It is part of our safety protocol that all volunteers pass a background check prior to volunteering.

High School principal, Candice Haffner, is retiring at the end of 2023, but the transition to a new principal will happen at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. At the school board meeting last night, the board approved the employment of new principal, David White, who will be bringing over 30 years of experience in education to the position. Mr. White is currently at Northridge schools, but is excited to become a Pirate.

Tickets are available for the Spring Musical.  The Addams’ Family will be presented April 21 at 7 p.m.; April 22 at 7 p.m.; and April 23 at 2 p.m. CLICK HERE if you would like to buy advance tickets.

Dear Pirate Families,

Teachers create lesson plans that spark the imagination of students. One example happened last Friday when Early Childhood Center students came into the classroom to discover a leprechaun had visited. Desks and chairs were out of place and there were tiny green footprints. Students were excited to see what had happened, and the experience was turned into a writing project where students described what they saw. Another writing project by Early Childhood Center students was describing the color, smell and taste of a jelly bean.

Teachers have used a March Madness theme in the classroom. Students read books and vote on their favorites. The books are narrowed down to the classroom favorite book, all while encouraging reading.

The Career Fair at the High School gave students the opportunity to explore business, military and college options available after graduation. It also gave them the opportunity to understand that what they are learning in the classroom today can be applied to their future.

These are just a few examples of how teachers across the district engage students using creative ideas. I am always amazed with the ideas that come from our staff!

Spring Break is March 27 through March 31. Students will return to school Monday, April 3 for even more creative lesson plans!

Dear Pirate Families,

The first day of spring is Monday, March 20. Next week will be the last full week prior to Spring Break which will be March 27 through March 31. Students will return to school Monday, April 3.

High School students will have the opportunity to meet with business representatives next week at the annual Career Fair. Students will be able to explore a variety of career options they may be interested in pursuing following graduation.

Middle School students had a visit from Captain Whitehead from the West Carrollton Fire Department. He spoke with students about the possibility of becoming a career firefighter/EMT. He explained the training necessary and followed up with CPR training.

We always appreciate when we have representatives from businesses and public service organizations who provide information to students on career possibilities. Students can learn more about a job they may be interested in pursuing as well as find out what training or education they will need. If you are one of those people who have participated in a Career Fair or been in a classroom to inspire students, thank you!

The Mural Club has one of their most recent art pieces displayed at the West Carrollton branch of the Dayton Metro Library. Visit the library and see “The Lost Boys” that was created by our talented students.

Good luck to Pirate Robotics #6032. The team is competing at the Miami Valley Regional Competition at Xavier University in Cincinnati this weekend. The robots will be in action Friday and Saturday. You can find out more and catch the action at https://www.firstinspires.org/team-event-search/event?id=63888 when the robots compete.

The fourth quarter begins Monday, March 13. I’m excited to see what the Pirates accomplish during the last quarter!

Dear Pirate Families,

As you are aware, earlier this week there was a tornado warning issued for West Carrollton. We immediately moved students and staff to designated safe areas in each school and communication started going out to our families.

Note that when a tornado warning occurs, office staff assist students and also take shelter. Until the warning is lifted, no one is in the office to answer phone calls or allow visitors into the building. Students may not be signed out of school.

We train for emergency situations throughout the year including drills. I am extremely proud of all of our staff who quickly reacted and made sure students were in a safe location. I am extremely proud of all of our students who followed directions and quickly relocated.

I want to thank you for your patience that day. I know that this affected school dismissal times and bus drop off times, but I can assure you that your child’s safety was our priority.

March is Music in Our Schools Month. Our students have the opportunity to sing and play instruments. They perform at concerts at our schools and throughout the community. I want to recognize all of our students in music programs for all of their hard work and dedication.

Today is Read Across America Day! Reading is an important part of every child’s education. Celebrate the day by spending some time together as a family reading.

The third quarter of school ends next Thursday. There will be no school on Friday, March 10 for QPT Day. The fourth quarter will begin Monday, March 13.

Dear Pirate Families,

Intermediate School students have been participating in an after school Drone Club. These fifth and sixth grade students have been coding and flying drones since January. They are preparing for a competition during the first weekend in March where they will fly and maneuver their drone through a series of obstacles.

Congratulations to the boys’ Middle School wrestling team. They did not win the league championship, but they scored 100 points which is more than any WC middle school team has scored since participating in the Miami Valley League! CLICK HERE to find out more about the team and their accomplishments during the tournament.

Senior bowler, Jordan Bannon, rolled a 722 series to win the Miami Valley League Championship by 74 pins. His scores were 206, 278 and 239.

The High School Symphonic Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra performed at the OMEA adjudicated event last Friday. The Symphonic Orchestra earned a Good rating in Class C and an Excellent rating in the sight reading room. The Chamber Orchestra earned an Excellent rating in Class B and a Superior rating in the sight reading room. You can see their encore performance on Thursday, March 2 in the Guiler Auditorium at the High School beginning at 7 p.m.

Ten 8th Grade Band Members were chosen to perform in two honor band events last weekend. Students were selected based on director nominations from across the Miami Valley. Two WC students performed with the WSU Honor Band and eight students performed with the OMEA District 12 Honor Band.

These are just a few of the events that happened recently where the Pirates have excelled. I’m so proud of these students who have worked hard to achieve success!

The National Honor Society will be hosting a volleyball charity match on February 24 at the High School with the first match beginning at 4:30. Admission is $5 and proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. CLICK HERE to find out more!

First grade students have been celebrating the number 100. Students in Mrs. Sanders' class made 100 valentines, collected 100 bagged snacks, collected 100 sweet treats and assembled 100 gift bags. Representatives from the Laurels of West Carrollton picked up the items to deliver to 100 residents.

Montgomery County College Promise selected 56 eighth grade students this year to be provided a mentor throughout High School. The students must meet criteria set by Montgomery County College Promise including maintaining a good academic and attendance record. Those students will then be eligible to attend college at little or no cost following graduation from High School. I’m excited that 9 of the 56 students selected are from West Carrollton!

I am proud of all of our students who are achieving athletic and academic success as well as giving back to the community. I am especially appreciative of the staff, coaches and families that work together to provide opportunities for the Pirates!

Students participating in We the People at the High School were able to return to Columbus for competition. This is the first live competition since 2020. Students combine history and government lessons, then present answers to questions in front of a panel of lawyers and judges. West Carrollton students were state finalists in the competition. I am so proud of the students who participated. I also want to recognize Mrs. Carlisle who has helped prepare this group of students as well as students who have been inspired by her classes and went on to pursue a career in law.

Following is one of the questions that students answered:

1. “To understand political power [correctly], and derive it from its original, we must

consider, what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons, as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature, without asking leave, or depending upon the will of any other man.”* If humans are in a state of perfect freedom, why is government necessary?

- How do natural rights philosophy and classical republicanism explain the purposes of and need for government differently?

- How are the principles and ideas of classical republicanism and natural rights philosophy represented in our governmental institutions and public policies today?

Congratulations to the boys’ basketball team who are first in their division of the Miami Valley League! They will be playing their last home game tomorrow night at the High School! The game begins at 7:30.

They are also collaborating with Robotics teacher, Mr. Neal, to possibly provide volunteer engineers to work with students in the Robotics Club. Art teacher, Mr. Grosvenor, is planning a collaboration where his students can create a mural to brighten the workplace at Domtar!

What are the most essential skills for job seekers? That is a question our students may face as they transition from High School into a career. The Montgomery County Education Service Center has shared with us a short video to inspire students that you may want to share with your child. Check it out at bit.ly/3GcYg0k

Congratulations to our Business Professionals of America (BPA) students! They hosted the Regional BPA awards where approximately 650 students from 6 different schools attended. Pirates earned awards in Advanced Interview Skills, Broadcast News Production Team, Entrepreneurship, Podcast Production Team, Presentation Management, Video Production Team and Visual Production Team. Students in Entrepreneurship and the Visual Production team will be advancing to the state competition in March!

As children, we loved when someone read to us. As adults, many of us love to listen to audiobooks! Listening is good, but it doesn’t take away from reading. It is a skill we all use every day, and I encourage you to listen to a book your child reads to you!

Don’t forget that the Athletic Hall of Fame will induct former Pirate athletes Brett Downing and Lee McNeal along with Pirate Crew supporter Leslie Miller, on Friday, Jan. 27.  There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, Jan. 16 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

We were recently made aware that a section of Lamme Road will soon be closed for repairs. This may affect area bus stops and pick up and drop off times for some students. We are busy working to create efficient bus routes to detour around the closed area and will soon be communicating the changes.

I want to congratulate Anthony Parker. He has been an inspiration to the boys’ basketball team for many years. He will continue to do so, but will also be taking over as Head Coach for the football team. Go Pirates!

The Pirates have started the third quarter. I want to remind everyone to be on the lookout for students walking to and from bus stops and to and from school, especially in the early morning hours when it is dark. Drive slow in school zones and on school property. Be courteous to other drivers.

January is School Board Appreciation Month! At the first School Board meeting of the year, Jon Lewallen was named President and Leslie Miller was named Vice President.     Facebook at West Carrollton City Schools.

     Twitter at WC City Schools

The district web page at www.westcarrolltonschools.com

Local news channels, including 2, 7, 22 and 45 are notified so they may begin televising alerts; however, we have no control over when they post the information, so you may want to check our social media and web page first. You may also be notified directly from the television station if you sign up for a text alert from them.

Phone calls are initiated beginning at 5:45 a.m. and continue until shortly after 6 a.m. or the evening prior if possible. The call system will make five attempts to contact the primary number. If there is no answer, the system will no longer call after the fifth attempt. If the system reaches an answering machine, it will leave a message. Anyone who has opted out of the call system will not receive a call.

We realize that delays and closings affect family schedules, and we do not make the decision lightly. We understand that no matter if we delay, close or stay open, not everyone will agree; however, know that many factors, primarily student safety, are considered before a decision is made.

I want to wish our Pirate community a happy holiday season! I am already looking forward to the Pirates returning in 2023!

Dear Pirate Families,

Congratulations to the Middle School students, families and staff who donated to the food drive. An average of almost 10 food items per person was collected! Food items were donated to Operation Share Christmas. The organization will distribute the food to over 260 local families. Thank you to everyone who donated at the Middle School, as well as those who donated at other participating schools.

ECC and Middle School students have been making holiday cards to distribute to local nursing home residents. I couldn’t be more proud of these young people as they learn about compassion and giving back to the community.

The Unity in the Community Blood Drive had 82 High School students who donated. The Unity in the Community blood drive has been happening since 2014. Each year, West Carrollton and Miamisburg students host blood drives and alternate choosing a charity to receive the $1,000 Unity Award sponsored by Universal 1. The WC students will be donating the $1,000 to Pirate Packs during halftime at the Jan. 7 basketball game.

Are you caught up with your child’s lunch charges? Government funding paid for lunches last school year, but that funding was eliminated for this school year meaning that you are responsible for buying your child’s lunch. You may send lunch money to your child’s school or pay online at PaySchools. You may also use the PaySchools link to complete an application for a free or reduced price lunch if you feel your child qualifies. Contact our Food Service Department at 937-859-5121, ext. 1121 if you have any questions.

— The first day of Winter Break is next Friday, December 23. There are a lot of illnesses happening at this time of year, and I want everyone to have a healthy Winter Break! One of the easiest things we can do to prevent illness is hand washing. Another is to cover your mouth and nose whenever you sneeze.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be kind!

Dear Pirate Families,

Congratulations to the girls’ basketball team! They are currently in first place in their division of the Miami Valley League! You can check out their stats and game schedule in the Miami Valley League as well as the stats and game schedule for all of our winter sports teams. Come out and enjoy a game and cheer for the Pirates!

Schools are having food drives and the donations received will be sent to food pantries to distribute to those in need. When you are at the grocery, please consider buying additional canned food or a non-perishable food item to donate.

Phase II of the district’s construction plans took to the skies today! If you saw drones flying over any of our schools, they were gathering photos and data to be used in the placement of the building to house grades 2 through 4 and campus to house grades 7 through 12. I will let you know when a meeting is scheduled for the community to be part of the planning!

It’s an exciting time to be part of the Pirate community! It’s also a season of giving. Giving doesn’t have to be an added expense. It can be as simple as sharing a smile or doing an act of kindness.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be kind!

Dear Pirate Families,

December is here, and so are fluctuations in temperatures. I want to remind everyone that students go outside for recess. Make sure your child has a coat, gloves and hat!

I want to congratulate Cameron Ekberg! Earlier this week, he signed with Heidelberg University to play baseball and continue his education after he graduates. He thanked his teachers and counselors, and many of them were in attendance for his signing ceremony. Another important person who attended was his baseball coach. Cam said he can always rely on him for a ride or advice.

I want to recognize two outstanding students who completed the 50-Yard Challenge. High School student, Aiden Theiss, and Middle School student, Nicholas Vanausdoll, each mowed 50 yards for people in need in the community.

I want to recognize High School student, Madilyn McCune, who was a co-presenter at one of the sessions held at the Ohio School Board Association conference in November. Maddy spoke about her role as a Student Representative for the West Carrollton School Board. The session was attended by school board members and school administrators from across the state who were interested in starting a similar program in their school district. Sarah Sari did not get to attend the conference, but also serves as a Student Representative for the West Carrollton School Board.

I am extremely proud of the students I have mentioned. They have set goals, helped out in the community and represented the Pirates in a positive manner. We should follow their example and consider ways we can help others and be good role models.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible.

Dear Pirate Families,

There is no school on Friday, November 11, for QPT Day.

Friday, November 11, is Veterans Day. I am the daughter of an Army veteran, and I am so proud of his service. I am equally proud of our many staff members who have served in the military. If you, or one of your family members, have served or are currently serving, thank you!

Veterans Day will be a little brighter for patients at the VA Hospital. Early Childhood Center students have been learning about Veterans Day and have been making special cards that will be delivered.

Members of the Concert Band performed at the outdoor gazebo at the VA this afternoon. I am so proud of these students for taking the time to perform for area veterans.

Social media challenges never seem to go away. One that has caused health concerns is the one-chip challenge. The challenge is to eat a chip that is made with a blend of hot peppers. Even a small taste of this chip can cause a reaction including immediate burning and swelling. Touching other areas of the body such as eyes and face after handling the chip can cause burning. Please talk to your child about this challenge as well as other social media challenges. They can be extremely dangerous.

It’s National School Psychology Week. The school district is fortunate to have a team of psychologists and mental health therapists that work with students and families. If you feel your child needs resources, do not hesitate to contact your child’s school for assistance.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible.

Dear Pirate Families,

As you know, keeping our students and staff safe is a priority for the school district. Tonight, the West Carrollton School Board has passed a resolution that will allow the district to add another layer to the District’s Safety Plan.

Formation of a District Response Team will allow certain highly trained staff members to have access to a firearm that would be located in locked safes within the school buildings. The resolution is in accordance with ORC 2923.122 and HB 99 signed by Governor DeWine.

I wanted to share with you that the formation of the District Response Team is still in the beginning stages and that it will take a year or longer before the results of this resolution will be put in place in our buildings.

I also want to assure you that staff members will not be allowed to carry a firearm into the school and will not be allowed to carry a firearm during the school day. Staff members will not be required to be part of the District Response Team, but may choose to volunteer.

Any staff member who does volunteer will need to complete a rigorous interview process with district level administrators and law enforcement. Following the interview, the volunteer staff member will be required to complete a significant amount of initial training, continued training throughout the school year and an annual recertification.

I also want to assure you that firearms, other than those carried by law enforcement, will be maintained in a locked safe. It will be a year or longer before safes are installed.

In the meantime, we will continue to review safety for all students and staff. That includes the addition of a School Resource Officer who will be joining the Intermediate School in January. We already have two at the Middle School and two at the High School. I will continue to explore the possibility of adding a School Resource Officer at all of our other schools with local law enforcement.

Other security enhancements we have made in the past few years are locking doors at the schools. Visitors may only access the building after using the door buzzer at the school entrance. There are cameras at each entrance as well as additional cameras throughout each building. Staff have completed ALICE training including intruder drills and will soon be having refresher training.

Your child’s education is important to us. Keeping your child safe remains our number one priority.

Dear Pirate Families,

There are a lot of events planned for Halloween, including Trick or Treat on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miami Township, Moraine and West Carrollton. Please use extra caution if you are out driving and watch for young people.

You may see some trick or treaters with blue pumpkin buckets. Families around the world have been using the blue bucket to raise awareness for autism. If you are passing out treats on Sunday and see a child with a blue pumpkin bucket, that child may be nonverbal or need extra patience when they come to your door.

— Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play will be presented onstage at the High School Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. Come out to support the performing arts!

— Pirate Madness is coming to the High School Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The boys’ basketball team will be hosting a fun evening that will include a food truck, live music, a dunk contest, a 3-point contest, red vs. white scrimmage and a cheer performance!

The High School Symphonic and Chamber Orchestra has been busy preparing to perform at the Dayton Convention Center on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in an Evening of Strings. This will be the 52nd event held that hosts area high school orchestra students, and West Carrollton was one of the founding school districts to participate!

The City of West Carrollton is hosting a Father-Daughter Dance on Friday, Nov. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. This is not a school activity, but we often get calls about it and I’m happy to share news about this fun evening! FIND OUT DETAILS, including how to purchase tickets in advance.

Congratulations to the High School Competition Cheerleaders. They brought the energy and excitement to the first competition of their season this year and brought home a first place win! They will be heading to Butler on Saturday to compete beginning at 8 a.m. Good luck. Go Pirates!

Lunch is not free this year, and families will be responsible for any charges incurredIf you feel your child qualifies for a free or reduced priced lunch, you must complete the ONLINE APPLICATION or return a paper copy of the application to your child’s school office or to the district office. Paper copies are available at all school offices as well as the district office. You may also choose to use PaySchools to prepay for your child’s lunch. Note that a’la carte items are an additional charge outside of a regular school lunch.  If you have any questions, you may contact Student Nutrition by email at [email protected] or call 937-859-5121, ext. 8.

Help keep your child safe! It is extremely dark in the morning when children are at bus stops. Please consider having your child wear white, bright and/or reflective clothing so they are more visible.

Dear Pirate Families,

— Phase II of the district’s two-part construction plan is underway. Last week, a group that included students, teachers, a school board member and administrators along with building architects and representatives from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission had a visioning meeting focusing on the campus that will house 7th through 12th grade students. One more meeting with the same group is planned for November.

There will also be community meetings in the future to receive input from  parents and community members. No date has yet been set, but I will keep you posted.

I have heard that some parents have concerns about Middle School and High School students being in the same building. The campus concept means all 7th through 12th grade students will be in the same building, but I want to stress that Middle School and High School students will be located in separate areas of the building. The campus concept does mean that some spaces may be used by both Middle School and High School students.

Some teachers currently travel between the Middle School and High School. An example would be a band or chorus classroom. Teachers will no longer have to travel between buildings and will have one classroom, but the classes will be scheduled to separate the Middle School and High School students.

There are still a lot of details, both big and small, to work on which is why we have formed our visioning committee. I hope this helps to clarify how we are planning a campus. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

— We have been working with the City of Moraine for several months now regarding a School Resource Officer (SRO) for the Intermediate School. The school district already has an SRO in place at the Middle School and two at the High School. I’m happy to announce that a SRO will be joining the Intermediate School in January! In the meantime, the Moraine Police Department continues to support the school through periodic patrols and visits to the Intermediate School.

— College? Career? Trade School? Military? The Montgomery County Educational Service Center is helping to sponsor one of the largest College and Career Fairs in the State of Ohio! The event will be Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Vandalia Butler Athletic Center. The event is open to the public and it is recommended you register in advance. FIND OUT MORE!

— Teachers and administrators use data to develop strategies to improve education in our classrooms. Would you like to find out more? CLICK HERE for a video about continuous improvement.

— Alfred Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play will be presented on the stage at the High School next week on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. Come out to enjoy the fall play and support the arts at the High School.

— School Board Vice President, Leslie Miller, has also been the Tennis Coach for 14 years. I want to congratulate her for being named the Miami Valley Tennis Club Coach of the Year!

— School Psychologist, Rachel Binnix, has been recognized by the National Association of School Psychologists and its Graduate Education Committee as a Model School Psychology Intern Field Supervisor. I want to congratulate her for supporting our students and being a role model for interns in school psychology.

Dear Pirate Families,

The Competition Cheer Squad is hosting a showcase on Monday, October 17 at 5 p.m. at the High School. The showcase introduces younger students to competition cheerleading and shows them an athletic team opportunity they will have in High School. The event is open to the public. Admission is free, though donations to the team are appreciated.

A group of High School Juniors and Seniors were able to visit three different manufacturing facilities last week. The visits exposed students to career possibilities they may wish to pursue following graduation. I want to thank Staub Manufacturing Solutions, FC Industries and NuVasive, as well as Jason Izor and other High School staff, for making this day possible. Find out more at Manufacturing Day

West Carrollton Firefighters have visited Harold Schnell and Harry Russell students this week. If you have a child attending either of these schools, your child will be talking with you about a home escape plan in the event a fire occurs. Next week, first grade students will get to visit the firehouse!

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, Friday, October 14.

National School Bus Safety week is next week. I want to thank all of our bus drivers for providing safe transportation for students. Remember to always use extra caution when driving around a school bus.

It’s been a beautiful fall season, and the temperatures are dropping. Please make sure your child is prepared for the cooler weather predicted for next week.

Dear Pirate Families,

Tomorrow night is going to be fun! West Carrollton Police are hosting a pre-game Pizza Tailgate Party in the High School parking lot at 5:30 p.m. Senior athletes, cheerleaders, pirettes, band members and color guard will be joined by their families for Senior Night festivities at 6 p.m. Kickoff for the Pink Out football game will be at 7 p.m. Put on your pink and come out and join the fun!

High School Counselors will be hosting FAFSA Family Night on October 11 and October 17. Find out more about this event in the West Carrollton School Counseling Newsletter

Fire Prevention Week is October 9 through October 15. I want to thank all of our local firefighters who support our students by coming to our schools to promote fire prevention and provide information about what to do if a fire occurs at home. Ways to protect your family are to make sure your smoke detectors are working properly. Discuss with everyone in your household safe escape routes from your home if a fire occurs as well as a designated meeting place outside.

The first quarter of school ends next Thursday, October 13. The second quarter will begin Monday, October 17.

There will be no school Friday, October 14 for QPT (Quality Professional Training) Day for staff.

Today is National Coaches Day. The day is meant to honor those who inspire us to work harder and do our best. That defines our athletic coaches and also our teachers and support staff who are inspiring young Pirates. The definition also applies to parents, guardians and any community member who is being a positive role model. Whatever your role is, thank you for inspiring our Pirates!

Dear Pirate Families,

Social Media Accounts can be fun and a way to stay connected with friends and family. I always urge families to monitor the accounts of their children. Make sure your child knows not to share passwords and not to share personal information.

This morning we were made aware of a threatening social media post that happened outside of school and school hours. We take these matters very seriously and immediately contacted the Moraine Police Department to investigate at the West Carrollton Intermediate School. We worked closely with the Moraine Police Department to ensure student safety while this matter was being investigated. It was quickly determined the threat was non credible and occurred due to a hacked social media account.

If you should see a threatening social media post, please contact your police department and the school. We need to all work together to keep our students safe.

Notification regarding the incident this morning was communicated to Intermediate School families via a text and voice phone call through our One Call system. I have heard from some families that they did not receive a call. It is important to verify your contact information in FinalForms to make sure the school district can communicate with you.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. You have seen this in some of my previous correspondence. It is posted throughout our schools. Why is it important? We encourage all of our students to be able to say “yes” to these statements whenever they are making a behavior choice. As adults, we want to be able to say “yes” to these statements in order to be good role models.

High School Seniors will be attending FAFSA Workshops October 4 and October 5. What is FAFSA? It is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It must be completed in order to get scholarships, grants or other financial aid for college. It is not just for students going to a 4-year college! It is also for students pursuing a 2-year degree or trade or certification program. High School Counselors will be hosting a FAFSA Family Night on October 11 and October 17 beginning at 4 p.m. FIND OUT MORE about FAFSA, including what your child will need to complete the application and what you will need to bring to the FAFSA Family Night.

Congratulations to Miami Valley Career Technology Center Senior, Nolan Batterton. Nolan participates in the Aviation Maintenance Technician program at the MVCTC, and is one of two students who signed to join the PSA Maintenance Student Pathway Program! FIND OUT MORE about this story and the job opportunity awaiting Nolan after graduation!

The Homecoming Parade was a lot of fun! I was happy to see so many of our students participating and the community coming out to support the Pirates. Congratulations to Cassidy Collins and Zoie Mercado who were crowned King and Queen of the Homecoming Court!

The Fall season arrived with cooler temperatures! Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.

Go Pirates! Our student athletes love when there are spectators to cheer for them during competition. Visit Tickets and Passes for information on how to purchase a ticket to an athletic event. Just a reminder —  WCSD attendance policy states that all students in grades eight or below attending athletic events as non-participants must be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone.

Dear Pirate Families,

Watch your mail! Information on how to access your child’s grades through Grade Book has just been mailed! Watch for your letter containing login information to arrive soon!

Did you know your child can receive a free book every month beginning at birth until your child goes to school? It’s as easy as registering at Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library! I am happy to share this information so that all of our future Pirates can develop a love of books and reading before they begin school. Feel free to share the link with any family you know who has a younger child not yet in school!

Driving safety extends beyond school parking lots and drop off and pick up areas. Also use caution when driving around school buses when they are picking up or dropping off students in neighborhoods. Always stop and do not pass a bus when it has flashing red lights and the stop sign displayed.

Keeping children safe extends beyond school and even your home. If your child is using the internet and/or social media, your child may be exposed to online predators. There are also those who hide behind their keyboards and encourage children to engage in inappropriate activities and those who engage in online bullying. Have a discussion with your child about cyber safety. Make sure your child knows to speak with you if someone they don’t know tries to contact them or if they are asked to do something they don’t feel comfortable doing.

There is a charge for lunch this year due to the expiration of the government waiver that allowed us to provide free school lunches for the last two years. We are working with state legislators in an attempt to have this changed as well as the dietary guidelines we must follow for school meals. In the meantime, if you believe your child qualifies for a free or reduced price lunch, you may complete the Free/Reduced Price Lunch Application online or pick up a paper copy at any school office. You may also prepay for your child’s lunch or pay student fees at PaySchools

The Homecoming Court will be introduced prior to the football game Friday night and the King and Queen will be crowned at 6:30. Kickoff is at 7. Go Pirates!!

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be a Pirate!

Dear Pirate Families,

We have transitioned to PowerSchool which will allow teachers to better use student data and provide a better educational experience. During this transition, parents have not been able to access student grades through Grade Book. We have been working with PowerSchool and this issue should be resolved soon. In the meantime, you may access Grade Book using your child’s login information. We appreciate your patience during this transition period. A letter will be sent home next week with your child’s login information as well as parent/guardian login information. The letter will be sent to the address that is in FinalForms. If you have not already verified and/or updated your child’s information in FinalForms, please take a few minutes to do so.

I am excited to give you a sneak peek of the Points of Pride that will soon be mailed to all of our district residents. We publish this annually in September, and it is a review of the previous (2021-22) school year. This includes stories about our Valedictorian who earned a 4.937 GPA, Salutatorian who received a 4.834 GPA, athletic scholarships and awards in the arts. It always amazes me how much our Pirates achieve, and I can’t wait to see their accomplishments this school year!

There is no school on Friday, September 16 for Quality Professional Time Day.

Exploring career opportunities was an experience a group of High School Juniors and Seniors had earlier this week at the Ohio Operating Engineers Training Center. Students attending the Construction Career Expo enjoyed hands-on experiences in a variety of areas including operating heavy equipment, carpentry and welding. Students also learned about the educational requirements and skills required as well as the salary and benefits the various career fields offer. Find out more at EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES

Next week is Homecoming week! Time to put on your red and black and show your Pirate Pride! The Parade is Thursday, September 22 beginning at 6 p.m. in front of the Early Childhood Center. The Homecoming Court will be introduced and the King and Queen announced on Friday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. prior to the football game at the High School. Kickoff at the DOC Stadium will be at 7 p.m.

I wanted to follow up on Mrs. Haffner’s announcements regarding the Homecoming Dance. The deadline to purchase a ticket is Wednesday, September 21. Any outstanding student fees must be paid and FinalForms completed prior to buying a ticket.

Student pick up and drop off times cause traffic congestion around the schools. Please be courteous of other drivers and avoid cutting in line. Be kind to our neighbors and don’t block their driveways. Keep Pirates safe and be a good example to students.

Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be kind.

The theme for Homecoming this year is Hollywood: Lights, Camera, Action. Mark your calendar for the parade on Thursday, Sept. 22 beginning at 6 p.m. on Pease Avenue in front of the Early Childhood Center. The Homecoming King and Queen will be announced on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. followed by PIRATE football beginning at 7 p.m. at the High School.

There will be no school next Friday, Sept. 16 for Quality Professional Training (QPT) Day for staff. Grade banding in all of our buildings means that staff from each grade level are now in one location and can work together every day. The QPT days scheduled throughout the school year provide an opportunity for more intense training and collaboration.

I want to remind everyone that our district Facebook page is West Carrollton City Schools and our Twitter page is @wccityschools. We have recently had a lot of spam comments on our posts that include links regarding sporting events. We take these down as quickly as possible. The only time we use a link is in our original post or if responding to a comment, and you will see it is from West Carrollton City Schools in the response.

We have made upgrades to our phone system including adding extension options when you call any of our schools. For example, you will no longer have to call the main office of your child’s school to contact the nurse. You will be able to choose the extension for the nurse when you call the school. This will be especially helpful when you are calling the High School or Middle School. Now you can quickly get to the office you want to call!

2022-23 Superintendent Updates is a new feature on our District News page. All of my updates will be compiled in one location where you can easily access previous information I have sent to you. The communication link I originally send will be available for about a week, then the content will be added to the 2022-23 Superintendent Updates.

I look forward to sharing with you what’s happening throughout the school district this school year!

Final Forms is an important tool for you and the school district. It is important that you review your child’s information in Final Forms every year to make sure it is correct. If information is not correct, it can affect our ways to communicate with you through mail, email and phone calls. Transportation can be affected if we don’t have the correct address. Information that should be verified and updated for your child every year includes:

  • Contact Information - address, phone number(s), custody - If your address has changed, you will need to submit proof of the new address - Questions regarding proof of address may be directed to your child’s school office

  • Health History - update any changes to the student’s health for the school nurse including medications and health conditions

  • Emergency Medical Authorization - includes emergency contacts and consent for treatment

  • Student Handbook - review the school policies and procedures

  • ODE Connectivity Questions - update any changes

  • Student Media Release - allows us to take pictures of your child and use the image for school publications including the school calendar and Facebook (choose MAY or MAY NOT)

  • Field Trip Permission - allows your child to participate in learning activities outside of the school district

  • Acceptable Use Policy - review of school policies to allow your child to use technology resources

Reminder - There is a charge for lunch this year. The waivers from the USDA that allowed us to provide a free lunch at school for the last two years expired. More information about menus and the cost for lunch can be found at Student Nutrition. If you feel your child qualifies for a free or reduced price lunch, you may complete an ELECTRONIC APPLICATION. Paper applications are available at every school office to fill out and return. Qualification may also provide you with a waiver for your child’s school fees. You may also prepay for your child’s lunch through PaySchools Central. Children are welcome to bring in a healthy packed lunch. Breakfast remains free and is available for all students.

School Calendars are available in every school office. Along with a lot of pictures, there is information throughout the calendar about what is happening in your schools as well as QR codes you may scan to connect to different school departments. It’s important to know that dates and times sometimes change after the calendar is printed. Watch for updates that come directly from your child’s school.

Summer communication was difficult as the phone system upgrades from our service provider took far longer than anticipated. I know this was frustrating for everyone attempting to contact us, especially as the school year was getting ready to begin, because the service was intermittent. It was equally frustrating for us because we truly do want to help you.

Friday Night Football is a little more exciting when the Pirates take on Stebbins tomorrow night. The game will be preceded by a Tailgate Party in the parking lot by the Pirate Ship beginning at 5:30. Food will be available for purchase for $5 including a hotdog, chips, drink and dessert plus a ticket to the game! Kickoff for the football game is at 7 p.m. GO PIRATES!

Driver safety is important as you drive on or around school property. Please be respectful of our neighbors, especially when driving around the new Early Childhood Center. Drive slowly and be courteous of other drivers.

There is NO SCHOOL Monday, September 5 for Labor Day. Enjoy a safe, respectful, responsible and long weekend!

Dear Pirate Families,

— I hope everyone is enjoying summer break! We are busy preparing for the school year and have scheduled an important training for all office personnel on July 27, 28, and 29. All school offices, as well as the Board of Education Office, will be closed on those dates. You are welcome to leave a voice mail or email on those days. We apologize if this causes any inconvenience. Offices will reopen on Monday, August 1.

— National Night Out is next Tuesday, August 2. We are excited to be part of the event being sponsored by the Moraine Police Department at 3800 Main Street in Moraine from 6 to 8 p.m. We will have giveaways for the kids (while they last!) and you can stop by and find out what your Pirate name is! We hope to see you there!

I know everyone is anxious for back to school information, and we are finalizing those details. Watch for communication from your child’s school as well as from me in the coming weeks. We’re looking forward to the Pirates returning to the classroom!

Dear Pirate Families,

I am excited to share with you the news that we received word today from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) has approved our state funding for the building project. This means we can begin planning for Phase 2 which will be construction of a new building to house students in grades 2 through 4 and a campus that will house students in grades 7 through 12.

The OFCC committed to providing 81% of the co-funded project. Passage of the Building Bond Issue in November, 2019, allowed the district to lock in that commitment leaving the community to pick up only 19% of the co-funded project. We were able to use the community share of the funds generated from the Building Bond Issue to begin construction. The Early Childhood Center and Intermediate school that will open on August 24 were Phase 1 of the construction plan.

Approval of state funding from the OFCC today means we will be immediately transitioning into Phase 2 of the construction plan. A new building will be constructed adjacent to the new Early Childhood Center that will house students in grades 2 through 4. A new campus will be constructed on the current High School property that will house students in grades 7 through 12.

The state funding we are receiving from is $124,285,706. The community share of the project is $29,153,437. The total project is $153,439,143. Funding varies by school district, and West Carrollton received $124,285,706 of the total $307,316,388 approved for five school districts. The West Carrollton School District also has the lowest community share of the five school districts which means we are receiving the highest percentage of state funding!

We anticipate that Phase 2 will take approximately two years from planning to completion; however, current labor and supply chain issues may cause a delay in completion.

This is an exciting time not only for our students, but for the entire school district community! We are happy to be part of the positive things happening in our community! Find out more about the project including the amounts funded to each school district
